Does your pet need to go through the border control post?
If your pet or animal falls into one of the following categories, it must be processed at a Border Control Post and undergo a veterinary inspection:- You are purchasing a puppy, kitten, dog, or cat from a non-UK country.
- You are rehoming a dog or cat from a non-UK country.
- Your pet is not travelling within five days of your own travel.
- You are travelling with more than five pets and you are not attending or training for a competition, show or sporting event.

Bringing pets into the UK: Choose your situation
For owners transferring residency from non-UK countries
Pet owners relocating to the UK from can apply for Transfer of Residency (ToR) relief before arrival to avoid import VAT. If a ToR reference number is unavailable at arrival, VAT must be paid but can be reclaimed once issued. Applying in advance helps prevent delays and extra costs.
For UK Residents returning with their Pets from another country
For UK residents returning with their pets from a non-EU country no VAT is required if you can provide proof that your pet left the UK with you within the last three years (such as an export Air Waybill) and proof of UK residency.
For those visiting the UK with their pets
For those visiting the UK with their pets, a temporary import customs entry is required, along with proof of your pet’s departure date from the UK.
For pets owned for less than six months or changing ownership
If you are purchasing a pet abroad or you are travelling with a pet you have owned for less than six months, 20% VAT will be payable on both the transport and arrival costs as well as the pet’s value.
